Photo tips

As I use your photos as reference for pet portraits, it is always beneficial when the reference I am using is as perfect as possible.

However some of you may be asking yourself, how do I create the perfect reference?

Well this page will discuss some tip and tricks into getting good photos as well as some further detail on references. If you are still struggling to take a good photo you can always contact via email and I am happy to provide further assistance.

Creating the best photograph!

The best setting for a photograph of your pet is outside on a bright, cloudy day without flash. Making sure your camera is at eye level with the pet and the photo is in focus, it is challenging to work with a blurry photo. You are looking to have a image that is clear and it is easy to see detail as well as the colour is as accurate as possible.

Your pets favourite treats or toys can be a useful tool in getting their attention!!

Good images
Here are some examples of good images, taken by myself, that are the perfect reference for a drawing. These are all well lit, the detail within the piece is clear and further they are taken at eye level with the subject.
Bad images
Here are some examples of bad images, taken by myself, that are the not perfect reference for a drawing.
The left image is taken from a far distance and zoomed in, this has caused the image to lose all of it's detail.
The middle image is taken in dark lighting, this has caused the colouring of the fur to be inaccurate and the detail within her main features to be lost.
On the final photo, on the right, the lightening is perfect and detail is easy to see however this image is taken from above the pet and not at eye level. This creates a bad composition.

Memorial - I understand that some of your animals have passed away, and that is ok. If you send me as many photos as you can, I will work with the you, the client, to make the best out of them. So do not hesitate to message just because you think they aren't as good.

Multiple animals - If you want a portrait with multiple animals, they do not need to be in the same image. I can combine multiple separate images to create the perfect portrait of your pets!!
